Power A De Riddims
One of the influences on our culture that cannot be overlooked is our music. The Caribbean is known for both reggae and dancehall. However, only the latter is known to negatively influence society. Dancehall fuels the intolerance in our society. It is seen as vulgar and is considered to be “bogey yagga” music, a term meaning to say that dancehall is music for lower class of people and created by lower class of people. An example is how the contestants in the UWI Mr and Miss Law 2019 competition which was held under a dancehall theme, received backlash and condemned for their “vulgar” dressing because of the misconception surrounding dancehall, and for students who are apart of a prestigious faculty and career such as Law to engage in the dancehall tradition is not acceptable because dancehall is not tolerated and of high calibre, and there’s a standard they have to uphold. Dancehall is viewed as glorifying sexual conquests, portraying women as sexual objects, criticizing homosexuality and preaching violence. Buju Banton, for example, advocated the killing of gay men and Bounty Killer celebrated gangsterism. Dancehall reinforces negative activity, glorifies violent activity and romanticizes negative criminal activity in society.
